OUR PARTNERS

United Nations
On June 3, 2021 the Center for Arab-West Understanding became a UN Partner organization.
American University of Cairo
Through our cooperation with AUC, we connect AUC students with our refugee students. By engaging with AUC students, our students get acquainted with university students, they learn how to write a research paper and improve their level of English proficiency. Brooke Comer is the Duke Engage liaison in Egypt, coordinating Community Based Learning opportunities for mixed groups of Duke and AUC and CAWU-Learning Centre students.
Duke University
Our partnership with Duke University allows our students to attend lectures on several topics. In this way, our students get an idea of how it is to study at a university. After every lecture, our students make a quiz on the lecture to see how much they learned from it. The points of the quizes count for their involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Kindermissionswerk Die Sternsinger is a German Catholic organisation, supporting projects for children worldwide. This includes education, health, refugees and rights for children etc. The ideas for the development of the CAWU Learning Centre came, after a meeting in March 2019 between Fr. John Kipkemoi Korir of St. Joseph Parish and Cornelis Hulsman of CAWU.

St. Joseph’s Church is running a learning centre for Eritrean refugees up until grade 8 of the Sudanese curriculum. The St. Joseph Learning Centre has no space to continue education after grade 8. CAWU was working with university student interns, who were ready to volunteer with secondary school refugee education. CAWU wrote in consultation with St. Joseph’s church a project proposal for the establishment of a new kind of refugee learning centre, that would provide them with an internationally recognised education. Sternsinger Kindermission provided St. Joseph church with a generous grant that was used in 2019-2021 to develop in the CAWU premises, the basic structure for a refugee school, following a British secondary curriculum. The number of refugee students in this period grew from 3 to 30 students.
