Arab West report

A Unique Source of Information on Muslim-Christian Relations in the Middle East

Arab-West Report (AWR) is an electronic journal founded in 1997. By presenting objective facts, AWR aims at preventing unnecessary escalations of tensions when they occur. It critically follows reporting concerning Muslims and Christians, the Arab World, and the West, carries out its own research and develops a database for media, students and scholars.

AWR does not limit itself to archival work only. It offers facilities in Cairo to students and researchers whose focus is Christian-Muslim and Arab-West relations. AWR provides critical comments to published reports and statements, both in the Muslim world and the West. Incidents between Christians and Muslims in Egypt are investigated by AWR with its own investigative reporters on location, which often results in supplying essential corrections to the reports in the Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and Western media.

In this post-revolutionary period, objective reporting about relations between Muslims and Christians in the Middle East is challenging. In a tense atmosphere with emotions and uncertainties, and at times violence, the truth can easily become victim amid the struggle. For this reason, providing objective news is essential. These are historical times when foundations are being laid for a new Middle East. The transition is complex and ultimately significant for the future of Europe and the West as well as Muslims the world over who intently follow developments in the Middle East.

In 1994, Dutch sociologist Cornelis Hulsman and his Egyptian wife, Sawsan, left the Netherlands to live in Egypt. They soon became aware that there was a lack of unbiased media reporting and took the initiative to publish Arab-West Report (AWR). AWR has developed an archive of reports concerning relations between Christian and Muslims in the Middle East, especially in Egypt. Since 1997, AWR has evolved into an indispensable source of information and knowledge about this issue for both people in the Middle East and the West.

Rousing statements from both Muslims and non-Muslims alike reverberate in the West and the Middle East. People in the West can no longer pretend that events in the Middle East and Egypt do not affect their seemingly safe and secure world. On the other hand, anti-Islamic statements and activities in the West can also provoke hazardous relations in the Muslim World, creating a possible chain reaction of hostilities. Whether we like it or not, there are often tense interactions between the Middle East and the Western World. Through critical analysis of reporting about relations among and within Middle-Eastern countries, between Muslim and Christian communities and sometimes responding to developments and incidents in the Western World. AWR tries to reduce such tensions.
